Roger Whelan

President & CEO

As President & CEO Roger formed Liberty Natural Gas LLC in 2008 , and subsequently merged into West Face Capital’s LNG business (Meridian LNG Holdings) in 2011. Roger has held a number of senior positions in the LNG field, spanning more than 25 years. Initially trained as an energy sector analyst with Morgan Stanley, he progressed as a financial manager for Amoco Corporation covering Russia, Azerbaijan and Egypt, and then on to Director and Head of the oil and gas at Rothschild & Sons in London. More recently Roger served as Director of Business Development for BG Group’s Global LNG Business and Director on the Board of Atlantic LNG. Roger has an MBA from the Wharton School, an MSc in Management Science from Imperial College London and a B Eng. and BA Mathematics from Trinity College Dublin.

Paolo De Luca


Paolo has almost two decades of capital markets and diversified business experience and has acted as Chief Financial Officer for both public and private enterprises in the resource, financial services, asset management and real estate industries including C.A. Bancorp and Potash Ridge Corporation. He has sat on the Board of Directors of private companies as well as acted as Corporate Secretary and Head of Investor Relations. Prior to working at C.A. Bancorp, he worked at Deloitte and Touche, Ernst and Young and Toronto Dominion Bank. Paolo has significant experience in capital raises such as initial public offerings, secondary offerings and private placements. Paolo has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business and is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charter holder.

Joseph Vaszily

Managing Director Commercial

Joseph has over 35 years of professional experience in the natural gas infrastructure and LNG energy sectors. Joseph began his career as a Construction Field Engineer at Distrigas of New York before joining Brooklyn Union Gas where he progressed through several positions including Vice President, Gas Energy Inc. (unregulated power development affiliate); Vice President, Methane Development (unregulated renewable energy affiliate) and Gas Infrastructure Development at KeySpan Energy Development Corp. Most recently he has served as Director, LNG/natural gas practice at Pace Global and Director, Business Development Inergy Midstream LLC. He also served as Executive Director for both the American Gas Association and the Natural Gas Supply Association. Joseph holds a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn, NY and a Masters in Business Administration from ST John’s University.

Stephen Ellis

General Manager UK & LNG Commercial

Stephen has over 28 years’ experience across all sectors of the oil and gas industry, with particular expertise in LNG, T&D and Commercial Operations. Prior to his current role, Stephen held a number of senior positions with BG Group, including: GM for Premier Transmission, the Scotland to N. Ireland transmission pipeline; BG Groups Director on the Board of Atlantic LNG; Commercial Director for Atlantic LNG; Asset Manager for BG Group upstream assets in Trinidad, and Lead Negotiator and Commercial Manager on BG Groups Egyptian LNG JV. In addition Stephen held the positions of Area Commercial Manager for the Americas and Asia and Commercial Operations VP where he managed a group of internal professionals. Stephen has a MBA from Bath University and a Degree in Economics from Queens University.

Douglas Jones

LNG Development and Marine Advisor

Mr. Jones has over 25 years of domestic and international LNG experience in the development and operations of LNG marine import and export terminals with roles advising in project acquisitions, LNG vessel specifications and chartering agreements, and technical matters relating to facility permitting, construction and operations. He has held several managerial positions and consultant to GDF Suez on several land-based and offshore terminals worldwide. Prior to his work in the LNG and gas industries, he worked 15 years in the electric power industry as marketing manager for Stone and Webster Engineering and as vice president for a small private energy development company. He holds a BA from Dartmouth College majoring in engineering (Thayer School).

Nigel Kirk

Port Meridian Development Manager

Nigel has over 25 years' experience across all sectors of the oil and gas industry, working for Contractors, Engineering Consultants and Operators, and is uniquely suited to his technical role as having previously installed two pipelines at Barrow in Furness.  Nigel has held several senior positions throughout his career, including:  Deputy Project Manager BBL Pipeline, the UK to Netherland interconnector pipeline (Saipem UK); Pipelines and Landfall Project Manager for York Field Development (Centrica UK Ltd.); Project Manger for German Sector Pipeline and Landfall (Nordstream AG); Construction Manager for German Sector Pipeline and Landfall for Tetney Pipeline and SBM Mooring (Wood Group Kenny UK).  Furthermore, Nigel has held numerous construction engineering roles on a wide variety of projects both in the UK and overseas, managing large site teams and complexed fabrication/engineering processes.  Nigel has an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering from Newcastle Upon Tyne University.
